Not far from the Catalan capital's famous landmarks, the natural parks provide endless short and long distance trails in Barcelona province for people looking for an escape from the city life. You could follow one of the many well trodden trails in the Montseny, in Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac or in the Montserrat. But if you want something more challenging there are several long distance trails in Barcelona province to choose from.

Long distance trails in Barcelona province

The long distance GR (Gran Recorrido) trails in Catalunya are marked with white above red stripe. The wrong way is usually marked with an ‘X’ (in trail colours). Other GR routes in other countries are also marked the same way.

GR5

The 200km long GR5 long distance trail in Barcelona province starts from the popular tourist town of Sitges on the coast about 40km south of Barcelona. And then traversing the natural parks of Garraf, Montserrat, Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac, Montseny and the Parc del Montnegre before finishing at the coastal town of Canet de Mar 40km north Barcelona.

There are two variants of the route. The GR5.1 deviates to Santa Cova – the Holy Cave of Montserrat – and then rejoins the GR5 just below the buildings of the Monastery of Montserrat. And the GR5.2 traverses the highest peaks in the Montseny Natural Park, and it is without a doubt a very scenic route that must not be missed. But if you are not up for the entire length of this truly amazing long distance trail, why not just follow the path through the peak of Matagalls and Turó de l’Home to enjoy some of the most rewarding views in the region.

GR151 Oliba Trail

The Oliba Trail, (or GR 151) starts from the Monastery of Montserrat passing through the counties of Bages, Osona and Ripollés and visiting historic towns and villages with Romanesque architecture along the way.

Follow the section from Tavérnoles to Sant Pere de Casserres, the 11th century monastery that was built on a remarkable location overlooking a stunning 180 degree bend in the river Ter.

The Oliba trail – just like the other long distance trails in the area – often runs together with other long distance trails.

Els 3 Monts

The 106km long Els 3 Monts route starts from Turó de l’Home, the highest peak in the Montseny. After the mountains of Montseny the trail passes Sant Miquel del Fai before entering the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac Natural park and then continues to the picturesque medieval village of Mura. From Mura you can follow the Els 3 Monts signs to Monistrol de Montserrat and then the final stage will take you up to the Monastery of Montserrat. The Els 3 Monts trail traversing three natural parks, often runs together with other long distance trails in the area. The sign consist of a symbol representing three mountains and a stage number. Use any of the stages for a day walk and you will want to explore the rest of the trail.

If you want to create a day walk using a section of any of the long distance trails near Barcelona the possibilities are almost endless. However there are myriad other waymarked trails to choose from.

The PR-C (Pequeño Recorrido) trails are usually less than 20km long trails, marked with yellow and white while the usually shorter, SL-C (Sender Local) local trails are marked with green and white.

You want to find a day walk or you want to take a week long hike following one of the long distance trails you won’t need to travel far from Barcelona to find a suitable trail in one of the natural parks. Catalunya is easy to get to as here are plenty of flights to Barcelona or even to Girona. The transport system is generally good however getting to more remote parts of the natural parks may require the use of a taxi.
