About us, about a hiking guidebook

Hi. We are Nike Werstroh and Jacint Mig outdoor enthusiasts and hiking guidebook authors. Many many years ago we met on a long coach trip and it wasn`t long before we’ve become inseparable. Travelling quickly emerged as our favourite activity and we had our first walking holiday in Madeira in 2008. We spent two weeks exploring the trails (without a walking guidebook) in the mountains and we were hooked. As we followed the narrow trails day after day, it became clear that we had a new passion; hiking.

Walking the RLS trail

Ever since that trip wherever we go we try to find the best hiking trails. Over the years we discovered many wonderful trails and we are eager to explore more. We would happily spend every single day on the trails in the mountains and when we can`t go on a walking holiday, we explore the trails closer to our home in Surrey.

Becoming hiking guidebook authors

It has all started in Cyprus in 2014. We were mesmerised by the nature trails in the Troodos but unfortunately we didn`t have a Cicerone guidebook with us. I think it is safe to say that Cicerone has some of the best hiking books for beginners. We used Cicerone books on many walking holidays and were always happy with them. However they didn`t have a Cyprus hiking guidebook in print and we had to use different sources (hiking websites) to read adventure stories and to find trails. When we returned from Cyprus we approached Cicerone Press with our idea. About 2 years, many-many kilometres, and innumerable hours of writing and editing later we published our first hiking guidebook.

Other books to follow

Walking in Cyprus was then followed by Gite in FranceWalking in the Algarve (also by Cicerone Press) in 2019, and in the meanwhile we trekked and researched the remarkable Robert Louis Stevenson Trail (GR-70) in France. The pandemic delayed things a little but eventually our Walking in Catalunya-Barcelona guidebook was published in November 2022.
Hiking and writing guidebooks have transformed our lives, and with our guides and the Trailnotes hiking travel blog we would like to share our passion for the outdoors with others.
