Walking in Andalusia

If you are longing for those heart warming sunny walks but can not wait until warmer weather finally reaches the UK, March and April could be the perfect time for walking in Andalusia in southern Spain.

walking in andalusia

The built-up belt on the coastline of Andalusia around Malaga caters for tourists with bars, restaurants and plenty of accommodation. You might find that some of the facilities are only open for the main summer season; however the places that stay open all year round most probably drop their prices during the off season. Base yourself in Nerja, and you will be spoilt with sea views and plenty of trails. From leisurely seaside strolls to the endless trails criss-crossing the rugged mountains, there is a lot to explore while walking in Andalusia.

Pico del Cielo

El Cielo

Distance: 20km (there and back)
Ascent/descent: 1400m
Difficulty: medium

This there and back route starts from Nerja Caves, on the outskirts of Nerja. It follows a broad track for a few kilometres before the final steep climb on the narrow, stony path to the summit of El Cielo. Your efforts will be rewarded with a spectacular 360 degree panorama, from Nerja ‘s houses on the coast to the snow capped peak of Mulhacen, the highest mountain in mainland Spain.

Frigiliana

Nerja to Frigiliana

Distance: 14.5km
Time: 4hr 30min
Ascent/descent: 930m/660m
Difficulty: medium

This route also starts at Nerja Caves. First, take the broad track to the El Pinarillo picnic site, and then follow the narrow path that roller-coasters its way through four gorges to Frigiliana. It is part of the GR249 (the Great Path of Malaga), therefore, expect to spot some helpful red and white signs, but despite being fairly close to the coast, there is a sense of remoteness to this route.
Allow some time to wander the narrow streets of Frigiliana and treat yourself to a refreshing drink (or two) in one of the many bars. Your return to Nerja couldn’t be easier, as there is a regular bus service between Frigiliana and Nerja.

El Fuerte

Distance: 8.5km (there and back)
Time: 3hr
Ascent/descent: 730m
Difficulty: easy/medium

The waymarked route leads you out of the pretty village of Frigiliana. Climbing above the houses, the views are dominated first by the coast and then by rugged mountains. After a short but occasionally steep climb, reach the rocky summit of El Fuerte (976m), where a 360-degree panorama awaits you. If you walk in the morning, you can be back at Frigiliana by lunchtime.

El Lucero

Distance: 24km
Ascent/descent: 1440m
Difficulty: hard

The trail starts from the outskirts of Cómpeta which lies only about 30min drive from Nerja. Follow the quiet forest track and then a scenic, narrow path to Portella Blanquillo. The demanding climb starts after Puerta Cómpeta, and you reach the summit after myriad switchbacks. With 1780m, El Lucero is one of the highest mountains in the area. Rugged mountains dominate the panorama that you can enjoy from the ruined fort.
Leave early and allow a full day for this outing.
